Sustainability

Delivering luxury without compromise, our sustainable supply chain and circular manufacturing process supports multiple product lifecycles and easier recycling through our award winning Environmental Services model

1. Reduction

Self-adhesive labels provide multiple product functions, including brand communication, safety and information labelling, as well as security features such as tamper evidence and anti-counterfeit mechanisms. If the label can be reduced via resource and material consumption i.e. energy, water, label size, material type, weight etc. without compromise to the label function, we will always seek to minimise impact.

2. Recycled Content

We promote the use of recycled plastic and paper content in all of our label substrates and have heavily increased the use of materials such as rPE and PCR paper to meet 2022 30% plastics tax requirements and reduced reliance on virgin materials. Offering a closed-loop solution through own recycling infrastructure, we support the collection and reprocessing of carrier liner and selected face stocks.

3. Sustainable Sourcing

All our standard paper materials are sourced from sustainable forests with full chain of custody. Non fossil fuel filmic substrates are also available from bio resources. Please see our accreditations below for more information.

4. Separability

Development of new formats, adhesives and substrates in collaboration with our global supply chain to enable the easy removal/separation of label from primary packaging, as well as assuring supply chain security.

Targeting both consumer separation (i.e. user removal of label material pre-recycling) and process separation (innovative wash-off or removal technologies during recycling process).

5. Compatibility

If labels cannot be separated, improved recyclability should be delivered via compatible substrates.

Secondary components are at risk of generating contamination in mechanical recycling processes if not compatible with primary materials.

We consider all composite substrates (label/bottle/tray/film etc.) to simplify and reduce mixed materials to a mono totality, where appropriate.

6. Recycling

Coveris’ Environmental Services offer a unique and sustainable service to Label customers. Providing an integrated, closed-loop recycling process, we have developed pioneering technology to enable us to recover over 10,000 tonnes of clean post-industrial and customer waste collections a year, the equivalent in weight to around 5,500 cars in the UK.

Our NO WASTE initiative targets a combination of production and redundant manufacturing waste as well as other paper and plastic used throughout the supply chain, including tertiary packaging.

7. Reuse

Reuse of recycled materials into new, extended lifecycle products. Supported by continued R&D into safe recycled content application

  • Recycled label liner
  • Recycled content facestock
  • Building materials
